Let’s talk about photography styles or genres! Just off the top of my head, here is a shortlist of a few different genres of photography:
Landscape, Macro, Editorial, Documentary, Journalistic, Lifestyle, Fine-Art, Street, Commercial, Shoot & Burn, and the list goes on! I like to think of myself as a jack of all trades when it comes to photography, but my absolute favorite genre is lifestyle photography.
When strangers ask me what I do for a living the conversation goes something like this:
“So, what do you do for a living?”
💁🏼♀️—— “I’m a photographer!”
“Oh wow, you do that full-time? What kind of photography do you do?”
💁🏼♀️—— “Yes, full-time! I own two photography businesses and also do a lot of freelance work with local and national companies. My specialty is natural-light lifestyle photography!” “So cool! I love my iPhone camera” OR “So cool! I know someone with a really nice camera” 🤣And we go on our merry way!
Anyways, back to photography styles... NATURAL-LIGHT is pretty self-explanatory, but what is does LIFESTYLE mean?
Lifestyle photography is a genre of photography that aims to interweave art and everyday life. The goal of a lifestyle session is to tell stories, document real-life, and see art in the everyday.
So what does that mean when you book a session with me?
Instead of focusing on predetermined poses, I focus on the experience. I encourage movement, playfulness, and interaction instead of static poses. Your gallery will be filled with the beauty of you and your family interacting naturally, not forced into rigid smiles.
Does this mean photo sessions are total free-for-alls and that I won’t give any direction at all?
Of course not! I will guide you into the best light, give suggestions on what to do if you feel awkward, and adjust things like flyaway hairs as much as is needed. I am there to guide your family through the experience of creating memories together. We will play games, explore, cuddle, and laugh a lot! Oh and don’t worry about the “Christmas Card” everyone smiling at the camera photo, we will still capture it! It just comes so much more easily when everyone is having fun already! 😉
Without further ado, here is a behind the scenes look at one of my family sessions!
As always, thanks for visiting my blog!
Love, Lillian Jean
