What to Wear for Family Photos | PNW Family Photographer

Not sure what to wear for your family photos? Whether we’re meeting at the beach, in the forest, or downtown Seattle, this guide will help you choose outfits that feel like “you” and photograph beautifully. As a PNW family photographer, my goal is to make the planning process smooth and stress free for my clients and I’m here to make it easier for you too.

1. Let the Location Inspire your Outfits

You’ll likely know your session location before you choose outfits, so let that setting guide your wardrobe Think about how you’ll interact with the space and what makes sense both practically and stylistically. Your location can help guide outfit choices based on the terrain and the time of year.

A few examples:

  • Deception Pass, Rosario Beach, or Ebey’s Landing – If your session is in the late spring or summer, light fabrics and breathable layers are great. Sandals or bare feet can work if it’s warm enough, but for cooler months, opt for boots or close-toed shoes that handle sand and rocks comfortably.
  • Downtown Seattle or Fairhaven in Bellingham – Urban locations pair well with bolder style choices. Think boots, structured layers, cool textures, or a pop of color. Great year-round!
  • Whatcom Falls Park, Washington Park in Anacortes, or forested trails – These spots are beautiful no matter the season. Cozy knits, flannels, and waterproof shoes or boots are practical and photograph beautifully in natural settings.

Pro Tip: Plan for layers. Even in the warmer months, Washington weather can be unpredictable. Bringing jackets, cardigans, or wraps keeps you comfortable and gives you more variety in your photos.

2. Start with One Outfit (usually Mom’s!)

Trying to style everyone at once is a recipe for stress. Instead, start with one outfit you love (often Mom’s because she can be the hardest to pick for) and build around that.

Tips:

  • Try on the outfit to see how it fits and moves, not just how it looks on a hanger.
  • Avoid pieces that need constant adjusting (like strapless tops can be super tricky).
  • If you’re planning to wear heels, pack flats or sandals for walking between spots.
  • Check for visible straps or lines that might show through in photos.

3. Coordinate Instead of Matching

Instead of putting everyone in the same exact color, aim for a palette of 2–4 coordinating or complementary colors. Mixing tones and textures adds depth, dimension, and a more natural look in photos – plus, everyone still gets to express their own style.

For example:
If you love blue, you might pair navy, chambray, and dusty blue with cream, tan, or even olive green for balance. Layering in neutrals like beige, gray, or ivory can help tie everything together.

You can also experiment with contrasting colors for a bolder look. Think rust and teal, navy and mustard, or burgundy and sage. These pairings can pop beautifully especially in urban or neutral-toned environments like downtown alleyways, concrete architecture, or wintery landscapes. The key is to pick tones that complement each other without competing too much.

Whether you go for soft and cohesive or bold and colorful, the goal is to create a look that feels pulled together, but not too matchy-matchy.

4. Mix in Textures and Patterns

Textures like knits, linen, denim, or corduroy add depth and softness to your photos. A little pattern can also go a long way, think florals, subtle plaids, or stripes.

Tips:

A good balance: one person in a pattern, another in a textured solid, and the rest in coordinating solids.

Avoid large logos, graphics, or cartoon characters.

5. Don’t Forget Accessories

Accessories can elevate a simple outfit and bring your personality into the session. Hats, scarves, cardigans, layered jewelry, and fun shoes can all add interest without overpowering your look.

Plus, layers are a lifesaver if we’re dealing with the unpredictable PNW breeze or chill.

6. Let your Kids’ Personalities Shine

If your toddler insists on wearing their red cowboy boots or carrying a stuffed animal, that’s totally okay! These quirks are part of your story and they make the session feel more real and memorable.

Fun fact: I went through a phase as a kid where I wore oversized red cowboy boots to school every day. No regrets. 😂

7. Be yourself (Really)

At the end of the day, I want you to look at your photos and think, “This is us.” Not “Why did I wear that outfit I didn’t even like?”

If you don’t enjoy dresses, you absolutely do not need to wear one. Dress in a way that feels true to your personality and lifestyle. Comfort and confidence always look better than trends.

These tips are here to help, not to stress you out. There’s no “perfect” outfit. There’s just what feels right for your family.

What to Wear by Season (in Washington)

The Pacific Northwest is beautiful year-round, but your outfit choices should reflect the season both for comfort and style. Here are some quick suggestions for what to wear based on the time of year:

🌸 Spring
Spring in Washington is often cool and a little damp, but the scenery is stunning: blooming trees, tulip fields, and fresh greenery.

  • Layers are your friend! Bring sweaters, light jackets, and shoes you don’t mind getting a little muddy.
  • Soft pastels, earth tones, and florals look amazing this time of year.
  • Umbrellas can be cute and practical, just in case!

☀️ Summer
Summer is your best bet for warmer temps and dry ground, especially July through early September.

  • Lightweight fabrics like linen, cotton, and flowy dresses work well.
  • Sandals and bare feet are fine for beach sessions, just watch out for rocky areas.
  • This is a great time for sunset sessions with golden light and open-air locations like Ebey’s Landing or Discovery Park.

🍂 Fall
A favorite season for many families: golden leaves, cozy vibes, and beautiful afternoon light.

  • Go for rich tones like mustard, rust, olive, navy, or cream.
  • Layers like cardigans, flannels, and boots work well and look great.
  • Expect crisp air and maybe a breeze. Bring warm outerwear, especially for kids.

❄️ Winter
Winter sessions can be absolutely magical with the right prep, especially in snowy spots like Mount Baker or holiday-lit downtown areas.

  • Keep it warm and functional: coats, knits, scarves, and boots are key.
  • Stick to darker tones, neutrals, or jewel tones that pop against gray skies.
  • Hot chocolate breaks encouraged ☕️
