From a Washington State Wedding Photographer
Choosing a wedding photographer is one of the most important decisions you’ll make for your big day. Your photographer is responsible for capturing the moments, emotions, and details that you’ll cherish forever. But with so many options out there, how do you find the one that’s right for you? Here are my top tips for finding the right wedding photographer to help you make an informed decision—whether that means booking me or another photographer who better fits your vision!
1. Figure Out What You Like (and Don’t Like)
This might seem obvious, but many couples I talk to aren’t entirely sure what they like or dislike when it comes to photography styles. Taking the time to figure this out is SO important!
Ask yourself:
- What styles of posing do I like? Do I prefer candid, natural moments or more traditional, structured poses?
- What editing styles appeal to me? Do I love bright and airy, rich and moody, or something true to life?
- Are there specific photography styles that I don’t like?
- Do I know the differences between the most common photography and editing styles?
Photography Styles:
- Editorial – Posed, polished, and fashion-inspired, with an emphasis on storytelling and narrative throughout the collection of photos.
- Lifestyle – Natural and relaxed, with some gentle guidance
- Documentary/Photojournalistic – Candid, storytelling-focused with minimal posing
- Fine Art – Artistic, dreamy, and carefully composed, often with an emphasis on soft light, elegant compositions, and an almost painterly quality.
- Traditional – Classic, posed images with a timeless feel, often including key moments like formal family portraits and structured couple shots.
- Film – Shot on real film for a nostalgic and soft look
- Hybrid – A mix of digital and film photography
Editing Styles:
- Light and Airy – Soft, bright, and romantic
- Dark and Moody – Deep shadows, rich tones, and dramatic contrast
- High Contrast – Bold colors and striking details
- Film Inspired – Nostalgic, soft, and organic-looking
- True to Color – Natural and realistic, keeping colors as they are in real life

Take some time to scroll through Instagram, Pinterest, and wedding blogs to get a feel for what styles speak to you!

2. View Full Galleries (Not Just Instagram!)
A photographer’s Instagram might be filled with stunning, curated images, but that doesn’t always show the full picture of their work. Request to see full wedding galleries to get a better sense of how they document an entire day. Pay special attention to:
- Consistency throughout the gallery—do all the images feel cohesive?
- How they handle tricky lighting situations, like a dimly lit reception or harsh midday sun
- Whether their editing style is consistent across different settings and lighting conditions
- The ability to tell the story of the wedding day. A strong gallery should have a flow and narrative that brings the day back to life, rather than just a strictly chronological set of images

3. Check the Vibes
Your photographer will be by your side for a huge portion of your wedding day, so it’s essential to find someone you click with. Here’s how to gauge the vibes:
- Set up a consultation call or meet in person if possible
- Pay attention to how they communicate—do they make you feel comfortable and understood?
- Ask about their approach to wedding days. Are they calm and go-with-the-flow, or do they take a more structured and directive approach? What feels right for you?

4. Read Reviews & Ask for Testimonials
Reviews can give you insight into what it’s actually like to work with a photographer. Look for feedback about their professionalism, communication, and ability to make couples feel at ease. If you’re feeling unsure, don’t hesitate to ask your photographer for references or testimonials from past clients.
5. Know Your Budget & What’s Included
Photography is an investment, and it’s essential to understand what you’re getting for your money. When comparing photographers, ask about:
- What’s included in their packages (hours of coverage, engagement sessions, albums, etc.)
- Their turnaround time for delivering images
- Any extra costs, like travel fees or second shooters

6. Trust Your Gut
At the end of the day, the right photographer for you is someone whose work you love, whose personality clicks with yours, and who makes you feel confident in your choice.
