Wedding Photography Timeline Guide

Wedding Photography Timeline Guide

This wedding photography timeline guide is meant to give you a realistic idea of how a wedding day can flow from start to finish. Every wedding is unique, so consider this a flexible framework rather than a strict schedule. We will customize your final timeline together, based on your priorities, locations, and lighting requirements.

PRE-CEREMONY

Details & Candid Getting Ready | 30–60 minutes
This is when we photograph meaningful details like the wedding dress, bridesmaid dresses, bouquets, shoes, all three rings, jewelry, invitation suites, and sentimental items such as heirlooms or something borrowed or blue. During this time, we also capture natural, candid moments as you and your people get ready.

Styled Getting Ready with Bride & Bridesmaids | 15–30 minutes
These photos are a bit more coordinated than purely candid moments. Examples include the bride with bridesmaids in matching robes, popping champagne, sitting on the bed together, praying, or exchanging gifts. This can also include the mother of the bride or future mother-in-law if desired.

Bride Getting Dressed | 30–45 minutes
Photos of the bride getting into her dress with help from her mom and or bridesmaids. Ideally, everyone helping is fully dressed before this begins. Some brides choose to get dressed privately with mom and then do a reveal for their bridesmaids. This can usually be accommodated, though more intricate dresses or tight spaces may require a little extra time.

Bride with Bridesmaids | 15–20 minutes (optional pre-ceremony)
Taking these photos before the ceremony can free up more time afterward for couple portraits. This is also a great opportunity for a few bridal portraits or photos with parents. If needed, these images can also be taken after the ceremony.

Groom & Groomsmen Getting Ready | 15–30 minutes
Candid and lightly styled photos of the groom and groomsmen getting ready. This is also a great window for portraits with the groom’s parents.

First Look, First Touch, or Gift Exchange | 15–30 minutes (optional)
We love first looks because they create a quiet, intimate moment together and allow for more couple portraits earlier in the day. If that is not your style, alternatives include a first look with a parent or grandparent, a first touch around a doorway, or a letter or gift exchange.

CEREMONY

Ceremony Prep & Hiding | 20–30 minutes
During this time, we photograph ceremony details and décor while you take a breather and stay out of sight from arriving guests.

Wedding Ceremony | 20–60 minutes
Most ceremonies fall within this range. If yours is shorter or longer, we will adjust the timeline accordingly.

POST-CEREMONY

Family Formal Portraits | 20–45 minutes
We recommend taking family formals immediately after the ceremony while everyone is already present. This helps keep things efficient and ensures no one is missed. Before the wedding, we will ask you to provide a detailed list of family groupings so this portion runs smoothly.

Full Bridal Party Portraits | 15–30 minutes
Photos of the entire bridal party, including flower girls and ring bearers if applicable. We will start with classic groupings and, if time allows, add more relaxed and creative portraits.

Couple Portraits | 20–45 minutes
These are some of our favorite moments of the day. Ideally, this time is scheduled close to sunset to take advantage of soft, golden light. We begin with timeless portraits and move into more playful, artistic images. The more time we have here, the more variety you will receive.

Reception Coverage | 1–3 hours
We document the key moments of your reception, including entrances, first dances, toasts, cake cutting, bouquet or garter tosses, and plenty of candid moments on the dance floor. We are also happy to help you plan the flow of events.

Grand Exit | 15–30 minutes (optional)
Exit photos can include sparklers, bubbles, ribbons, or glow sticks. If coverage does not extend to the end of the reception, we can stage a faux exit with just the bridal party. Please note that some venues do not allow sparklers.

A well-planned wedding photography timeline creates space for both beautiful photos and a meaningful wedding day experience. We will customize your timeline together so it supports your vision, your relationships, and the way you want your day to feel, while leaving room for real moments to unfold naturally.
